someone, please diagnose me.
4 / 29 / 2010Ok y’all. I keep having the SAME recurring dream (redundant, I know).
It’s not that I’m naked or having sex with a platypus (what? That’s not…never mind) or falling down some giant chasm.
No. Instead, I dream that in some fashion, my teeth start crumbling and fall out and I’m left with a mouth FULL of broken bits of teeth.
And when I say “in some fashion” I mean they just FALL OUT. No one punches me or gives me some weird potion or hits me with a sledge hammer.
They fall out ALL BY THEMSELVES.
And it is THE MOST REPULSIVE, UNPLEASANT SENSATION ON. THE. PLANET.
Not to mention super uncomfortable because for whatever reason, I can never seem to be able to spit out the bits of teeth. In my dream, I mean.
What is my problem??
HALP ME!
Please?
I guess I should also mention I get serious ebbie jeebies when shows like America’s Funniest Videos put on clips of kids trying various methods to yank out a loose tooth and I’ve already delegated that childhood phenomenon to Tim.
I don’t *do* teeth.
And I really, really hate that dream.
And it JUST happened.
AGAIN.
I’m begging, actually.
HAAALP!
This cannot *be* normal.

Funny- I’m a pro with dreams. Took many a dream analysis classes. Usually the teeth falling out means you feel like you are having a hard time holding everything in your life together. It is a common dream, like the standing naked in front of the board room dream. Are you have a lot of dreams where you are in your childhood home or school? Your mind will also do that when you are stressed because it is a safe place before so many adult responsibilities. Your playtpus, well, I have no idea…there may be cause for concern there:)
I think I’ve read that this dream means you don’t feel in control of your life. I don’t know how to make it stop unfortunately. I also hate teeth. Nothing make bile rise in my throat faster than those horrid dentist commercials where they show bad teeth. The mere thought… Must think about puppies, puppies, puppies, not teeth….
People who *know* about dream kind of things say that kind of a dream is related to anxiety. xo
Ok, I did some research for you and this is what I found:
“One theory is that dreams about your teeth reflect your anxieties about your appearance and how others perceive you. Sadly, we live in a world where appearance and attractiveness matter and your teeth help to convey that image. Teeth play an important role in the game of flirtation, whether it be flashing those pearly white, kissing or necking. Thus, such dreams may stem from a fear of rejection, sexual impotence or the consequences of getting old.”
Heres the whole article:

So with that information…..rest assured, your perfect Jess. Just ask Tim. BET he concurs. =)
There are a few theories – appearance is one of them, fear of embarrasment is another. Also, feeling like you’re not being heard. The article referenced above is a good one.
Yeah, I’ve had teeth falling out dreams. I hear they’re pretty common. Like everyone above is saying, it has to do with stress.
Recurring dreams are no fun! I have them about my fish all being dead which is supposed to mean my creative side is being neglected? As for teeth, I’ve read that it can mean you’re worried about your health or a lie that you told someone. Now the only thing I’m wondering is, would I still have night mares about dead fish if I didn’t have fish?
I have that dream too although usually my teeth explode out of my mouth in a jet of blood. Awesome. It’s an anxiety dream of mine and if I have it then I know that I’m way too stressed out about something and I need to fix that stat!
One of my roommates in college was a psych major and she was always analyzing us
she said that’s a really common dream actually, and like everybody else said, it can be related to anxiety or fear of change/loss of control. Also, powerlessness because you can’t stop them from coming out. I’ve also heard fear of death/aging because we lose our teeth when we’re a) really young and b) really old. Don’t know about that one…but either way – NO FUN. Go away bad dreams!
I have these too. I just had one a couple days ago. Like the others said, I’ve always heard that it has to do with feeling out of control. I don’t feel that way when I’m awake though so it must be a subconcious thing. Either way, that kind of dream is actually considered normal as weird as that is.
BTW, I also HATE teeth.
i know you’re part german so i thought i’d share this with you. to germans (female germans at least) a dream of falling out teeth means that they either are pregnant or want to be.
go figure
Ding Ding Ding!!!!!!! I Like Franzi’s answer!!!!
Dear All of My Wonderful, Lovely Shrinks:
So you think I’m ANXIOUS?…really?!?!?….dammmmit…I *knew* there was something totally wrong with me and now I get why people stare at me all one-eye-willied and I knew I wasn’t pretty enough but now my dreams are finally telling me the truth and what in the hell AM I GOING TO DO???…..
Also? I see dead people. Correlation?
(well, ok. So I don’t *really* see dead people…but if I did…talk about anxiety…and dark rooms…there would never be another dark room, ever. EVER. Because that’s where all the dead people are. Duh. Dark rooms. And lakes.)
Also again? I’m probably delirious. I’ve already worked 45 hours this week. And today’s only Thursday. This means tomorrow – Friday – will be shittastic day. This also means I haven’t had two seconds (until now) to respond to you. Until now, that is (didn’t I saw that, already? Damn. I’m sure you’re super confused. I confuse my own brain {Hi, Babs! Love ya. Mean it!})
On the plus side? Yesterday, among other things, I learned how to make soft pretzels and a blown-sugar crab.
I know. I’m awesome?
Lol, I read that as brown-sugar crab.
See, you thought everyone had forgotten about your blog, and everyone is here commenting.
You quit the job before because of stress, soooooo….maybe do it again?
It sucks when you have the same dream over and over, especially when it’s a stressful dream you don’t even understand why you’re having!
Well, looks like everyone else has the analysis part covered, but I offer another one (that, yes, has happened to me): Maybe it’s time for a dental checkup? lol
My reoccuring dreams of late have been being buried alive. I’d happily take back the toothless dreams. The buried alive ones freak me out.
